The original club was formed in early 1972. All shooting disciplines were encompassed under the heading of Bridgwater Gun Club. This proved to be quite unwieldy and factions within the club decided to split into Shotgun, Pistol and Rifle sections. Both Shotgun and Pistol remained under the Bridgwater Gun Club banner whilst the Rifle section moved on to pastures new.
Sedgemoor Target Shooting Club was formed in late 1972, and originally based in the Rose & Crown Public House in Bridgwater (now closed). The new Club moved to the Burnham on Sea rifle range in October of that year, starting out as Rifle only (both small bore and full bore). Due to further fragmentation within Bridgwater Gun Club, it quickly added Shotgun and Pistol (including black powder) and boasted a membership in the high thirties.
